Butterfly Sites in Sussex

Southwater Woods

Description:Southwater Woods is a complex of woods with Madgeland Wood to the west and Marlpost Wood to the east. Before Knepp Castle Estate assumed its pre-eminent position, the Southwater Woods were considered to be the best location, in Sussex, to see Purple Emperors.

Your best chance of seeing a Purple Emperor is to walk along the west-east ride of Madgeland Wood, between TQ131257 and TQ140254. Marlpost Wood is also very good for all the target species. Explore the track that runs from TQ141258 to TQ141254 (via TQ147254).
Species:Target species include Silver-washed Fritillary, White Admiral, and Purple Emperor.
Best time to visit:The last week of June and the whole of July for the main target species.
Additional notes:Southwater Woods is an excellent complex of woods to find these three target species but there are plenty of other butterfly species to see in the sunny, sheltered woodland rides.
Getting there:At the western edge of Madgeland Wood there is a small parking area on Trout lane at TQ131257. At the northern edge of Marlpost Wood you can park at TQ141258. There is room for just two cars at
TQ141254.
