The Sussex Branch of Butterfly Conservation

Butterfly Conservation is a national charity dedicated to the conservation of butterflies and moths. Sussex Butterfly Conservation is a branch of the national organisation and is run entirely by volunteers.

Throughout the butterfly season, there are walking events which are led by senior members of Sussex BC.

For the past few years conservation work parties have been restricted to Rowland Wood / Park Corner Heath. Under the leadership of Neil Hulme, a stalwart band of volunteers have helped create a rich and enduring habitat for many species of butterflies and moths, including colonies of Pearl-bordered and Small Pearl-bordered Fritillaries.

This situation has changed in 2025 and 2026 when a programme of conservation work has begun at Mill Hill, Kithurst Hill, Washington Chalk Pit and Rewell Wood. Sussex BC members are also invited to help out at Warnham Butterfly Fields, where they will be warmly welcomed as guests.

Our aims:

• Halt and reverse the decline of threatened species of butterflies and moths in the many wonderful nature reserves we have in Sussex
• Support policies that help farmers and landowners to manage their land more effectively for all wildlife
• Increase the numbers of butterflies and moths across the wider landscape but especially our gardens, where all of us can make a difference
• Recruit and train “transect recorders”, to continue with this valuable monitoring work
• Raise awareness amongst the public (and especially young people), about the role of butterflies and moths in contributing to a healthy environment and the need to conserve them now and in the future.

Sussex is a fantastic county for butterflies and moths - We hope to inspire you to help protect and save them too.
