Following the early completion of habitat works at Kithurst Hill, the conservation work party on Friday 30 January (start 10.00 am) will now be held at Washington Chalk pits (TQ127120).
Just east of Washington Roundabout, head south through Washington village up Washington Bostal and, just before rejoining the southbound A24 London Road, dogleg left at TQ11961188 onto the track (South Downs Way) into the Wiston Estate car park at TQ12031199.
Most people will park here and walk 800 m up the SDW to the site, with the option to put any tools you bring (I don't have the rakes some of us will need) in my car. JC (assuming available) and I will drive up to the pits with tools. Wiston Ecologist Penny Green will be with us and can offer lifts up the track if needed.
I'm waiting to hear if the same group of SDNPA volunteers can join us. I've always believed that this site has the potential to become as good as Kithurst Hill, and much work has recently been done to move it in this direction.
This year, I recorded 32 species here, including Duke of Burgundy, Grizzled Skipper, Dingy Skipper, Silver-spotted Skipper, Small Blue, Chalk Hill Blue, Small Heath, Wall, Dark Green Fritillary and Green Hairstreak.
