Bevendean Down Local Nature Reserve is a beautiful area of chalk downland located in the north-east of Brighton, within the city’s periphery and the South Downs National Park. The reserve supports a rich diversity of wildlife, with 35 butterfly species recorded to date. These include the Silver-spotted Skipper, Small Blue, Adonis Blue, Chalk Hill Blue and Queen of Spain Fritillary.
Different factors, including climate change, have encouraged scrub, brambles and cotoneaster to colonise areas of the reserve that were previously chalk grassland, resulting in the degradation of these species-rich habitats and a decline in biodiversity.
The Friends of Bevendean Down (FoBD), a group established in 1990 to help preserve the reserve, runs a series of conservation work parties aimed at halting this decline. If you would like to get some fresh air, spend some of your time helping nature, meet new people, or simply do something different this winter, why not lend a hand at Bevendean Down?
