Knepp Castle Estate


Description:This 1,400 hectare estate is criss-crossed by footpaths, bridleways, and permissive access routes. It is the best location in the UK to see large numbers of Purple Emperors.
Species:Target species include Marbled White, Purple Emperor, Brown Hairstreak, Purple Hairstreak and White-letter Hairstreak.
Best time to visit:Best known for Purple Emperors and Purple Hairstreaks, and so around June 20th and the following 4-5 weeks.
Additional notes:Purple Emperor watchers usually head for the track between Blonks Farm and Countryman’s lane (TQ134193 and TQ141213).
Getting there:The Knepp Estate lies to the south of Southwater and to the west of the A24. There is a small car park in Shipley village, near the windmill at TQ143219. To accommodate visitors for the Purple Emperor season the Knepp Estate open a temporary car park for which they charge a fee. See their
