Butterfly Sites in Sussex

Beachy Head to Birling Gap

Description:This area is worth a visit just for the views! The 3km pathway between Beachy Head and Birling Gap is a mecca for butterfly enthusiasts, as all the usual downland species can be seen.
Species:Target species include all six Sussex skipper species, Clouded Yellow, Dark Green Fritillary, Painted lady, White-letter Hairstreak, Adonis Blue, and Chalk Hill Blue. In 2023, Brown Hairstreak was added to the list.
Best time to visit:All-season-long, but this location is especially productive in July and August when so many of the named target species may be seen.
Additional notes:This area has some of the most dramatic and iconic scenery in the British Isles and the butterfly list is
outstanding.
Getting there:The Birling Gap/Beachy Head coastal road runs close to the cliff edge and there are a number of “pay and display” car parks along its route. There is a visitor centre at Birling Gap at TV554960 and the Beachy Head Countryside Centre is located at TV589958.
