Butterfly Sites in Sussex

Rewell Wood

Description:This wood supports the largest remaining population of Pearl-bordered Fritillary in West Sussex, due to the sympathetic management of the Sweet Chestnut coppice.
Species:Target species include Grizzled Skipper, Pearl-bordered Fritillary and Silver-washed Fritillary.
Best time to visit:Strongly influenced by the spring weather but usually the last week of April and the first two weeks of May for Pearl-bordered Fritillaries.
Additional notes:Rotational coppicing of the Sweet Chestnut leads to an abundance of Common Dog Violet, which in turn supports a large population of Pearl-bordered Fritillaries. Search for fritillaries along the ride between SU980079 and SU982078.
Getting there:Rewell Wood is located between the A27 and A29 to the west of Arundel. Access is slightly awkward, but most visitors park at Fairmile Bottom and enter Rewell Wood along the footpath, at the southern end of the steep slope at SU984087.
