Butterfly Sites in Sussex

Castle Hill

Description:This is a National Nature Reserve managed by Natural England. The butterfly list is impressive, and it is also one of the best locations in Sussex to see a delightful variety of Orchids. It’s a very large site but if you walk along the slopes between TQ366069 and TQ369071 you should see most of what this butterfly haven has to offer.
Species:Target species include Dingy Skipper, Silver-spotted Skipper, Marbled White, Dark Green Fritillary, Small Blue, Adonis Blue, and Chalk Hill Blue.
Best time to visit:All-season-long but probably best from mid-June onwards when spectacular numbers of Marbled White and Dark Green Fritillary may be seen.
Additional notes:Castle Hill is an excellent location to see large numbers of butterflies and also a very impressive variety of orchids.
Getting there:The car park on Falmer Road is at TQ356063. From there, walk east 600 metres to enter the open access land at the western edge of the reserve at TQ363064.
