Butterfly Sites in Sussex

Ashdown Forest

Description:Ashdown Forest encompasses 2,600 hectares of heaths and woodlands and is one of the largest areas of open countryside in southern England.
Species:Target species include Small Heath, Small Copper, Green Hairstreak and Silver-studded Blue.
Best time to visit:Ashdown Forest is high up on the Sussex Weald and is a little bit colder than the rest of the County. The emergence of Silver-studded Blues is usually 1-2 weeks later compared to the first adults at Iping Common (although in 2024 the first sightings were just six days later, on June 17th). A visit in the last week in June, should be about right.
Additional notes:The main attraction for butterfly enthusiasts are the colonies of Silver-studded Blues. The best sites are in the Camp Hill/Kingstanding area. Search the heathland around Smugglers car park at
TQ473296, Roman Road car park at TQ473292, the areas north of Poundgate car park at TQ4782898, and south of Hollies at TQ463284.
Getting there:The B2026 running north across Ashdown Forest gives you access to a number of fee-paying car parks.
