Description:This Local Nature Reserve is located on the eastern edge of Brighton, next to Brighton Racecourse. This site supports a good selection of downland butterfly species and in recent years has become very well-known for its breeding colony of Long-tailed Blues.
Species:Target species include Dingy Skipper, Grizzled Skipper, Wall, Dark Green Fritillary, Long-tailed Blue, Small Blue, Adonis Blue, and Chalk Hill Blue.
Best time to visit:August, September and October for Long-tailed Blues.
Additional notes:Despite its proximity to two heavily populated urban area, this site has an excellent diversity of butterfly species. The Everlasting Pea provides the larval foodplant for migratory Long-tailed Blues.

Footfall and the trampling of the Everlasting Pea has become an issue, and butterfly photographers are reminded that they should endeavour to leave the site in the same condition as they found it!
Getting there:You can park on the residential roads beside the racecourse and enter the reserve at TQ330048. Follow the bridlepath, north, for one hundred metres and then bear NE down the diagonal track and explore the flower-rich bank from TQ331047 to TQ332051.
