Butterfly Sites in Sussex

Warnham Nature Reserve

Description:To quote from the Warnham Nature Reserve website: “Lots of work has been put in to creating a number of well lit, warm woodland rides particularly in the Millpond Plantation on the east side of the Reserve. This has been of great benefit to the butterfly population with high numbers of Silver-washed Fritillary, White Admiral and Ringlet frequently seen. Scarcities such as Brown Hairstreak, Purple Emperor are recorded annually and 2016 saw our first sighting of Long-tailed Blue”.
Species:Target species include Essex Skipper, Orange-tip, Marbled White, Silver-washed Fritillary, White Admiral, Brown Hairstreak and Purple Hairstreak.
Best time to visit:All-season-long, but early spring for Orange-tips and the whole of July for the high-summer target species.
Additional notes:A well-managed reserve with plenty of wildlife on offer, including a list of 35 butterfly species (which away from the South Downs is a very creditable number).
Getting there:The reserve’s visitor centre (with car park, toilets, and café) is located at the NW edge of Horsham and just 200 metres to the east of the A24 at TQ167323. There is a small admission fee to enter the reserve.
