Rowland Wood and Park Corner Heath


Description:These are two adjacent nature reserves that are owned and managed by Butterfly Conservation. They are situated in the NW corner of the Vert Wood complex, which is approximately 7-8 km north-west of Hailsham.
Species:Target species include Dingy Skipper, Grizzled Skipper, Brimstone, Wall, Pearl-bordered Fritillary, Small Pearl-bordered Fritillary, Silver-washed Fritillary, Dark Green Fritillary, White Admiral, Purple Hairstreak and Green Hairstreak.
Best time to visit:Strongly influenced by the spring weather but usually the last week of April and the first two weeks of May for Pearl-bordered Fritillaries and approximately May 20th until June 10th for Small Pearl-bordered Fritillaries.
Additional notes:Very actively managed to encourage all butterfly species, but especially the re-introduced Pearl-bordered Fritillary and Small Pearl-bordered Fritillary.
Getting there:These reserves are on the west side of the A22, approximately 1km south of East Hoathly. Approaching from the north, on the A22, turn by “The Thatched Garage” into Park lane. If travelling from the west via Lewes and Ringmer, then take the B2124 through Laughton and then turn left into Park lane. Continue through Vert Wood for 2km and when the lane dips for the last time, turn left and the parking spaces are on the right at TQ515147.
