Kithurst Meadow |
|
---|---|
Description: | The most visited butterfly site in Sussex, and with good reason. Just one hectare in size, it boasts a list of 40+ butterfly species. Lots of visitors means lots of footfall and so everyone must play their part to help keep this “little gem” in good condition, and that means sticking rigidly to the perimeter footpaths. |
Species: | Target species include Dingy Skipper, Grizzled Skipper, Duke of Burgundy, Green Hairstreak, Small Blue, Chalk Hill Blue and too many more to name! |
Best time to visit: | All-season-long but mid-May for Duke of Burgundy, Small Blue and the other spring target species. From mid-July and the whole of August for just about everything Sussex has to offer! |
Additional notes: | Arguably the best butterfly site in Sussex as it combines chalk turf with a woodland surround. This means that more-or-less all our Sussex butterfly species either live there or visit. Rarities recorded include Queen of Spain Fritillary, Glanville Fritillary and Swallowtail. |
Getting there: | The access lane is 1.5km west of Storrington on the Amberley Road. Take a very sharp left into this lane and head south towards the South Downs. The car park is on the South Downs Way at TQ069124. Once parked, walk back through the car park entrance and you will find Kithurst Meadow just a few metres on your left (you are now facing north). |
