Iping and Stedham Commons |
|
---|---|
Description: | A heathland site, managed by Sussex Wildlife Trust, this is the best location in Sussex to observe Silver-studded Blues. |
Species: | Target species, Silver-studded Blue. |
Best time to visit: | Although Silver-studded Blues begin to emerge in the first half of June you are more likely to see good numbers in the third or fourth weeks of June (for example, in 2024, there was a count of 30 on June 17th). |
Additional notes: | Silver-studded Blue is a nationally rare butterfly species. In Sussex, these tiny blue butterflies can be found at Iping and Stedham Commons, and Ashdown Forest. |
Getting there: | Between Midhurst and Petersfield, on the A272, turn south 2.5km west of Midhurst, onto the road to Elsted. After 200 metres the car park is on your right at SU852220. Take the wide track that runs west from the car park and explore the edges of the track between SU848220 and SU844220. The sheltered heath below Stedham’s pine plantation at SU856217 is another hotspot for Silver-studded Blues. |
