Butterfly Sites in Sussex

High and Over

Description:This location is best known for its large colony of Wall butterflies, but most of the downland species can be found and sometimes in spectacular numbers, as for 3,000+ Brown Argus which were located in one small area in 2023.
Species:Target species include all the Sussex skippers, Wall, Small Heath, Green Hairstreak, Brown Argus, Small Blue, Common Blue, and Chalk Hill Blue.
Best time to visit:All-season-long but for the second-brood Wall Browns visit in the last week of July and the first two weeks of August.
Additional notes:A very good variety of downland butterfly species can be found but the most notable is the very large colony of Wall butterflies.
Getting there:The car park is located at TQ510009. Cross the road, facing west, and there should be plenty of butterflies in the long strip of grassland which runs from TQ511014 and TQ488023.
