Heyshott Escarpment |
|
---|---|
Description: | An exploration of this downland requires climbing a very steep slope, so be warned. It is best known for its large population of Duke of Burgundy but there is a very good supporting cast of other butterfly species. It is one of the best locations in Sussex to see a wide variety of orchids. |
Species: | Target species include Dingy Skipper, Grizzled Skipper, Small Skipper, Small Heath, Duke of Burgundy, and Green Hairstreak. |
Best time to visit: | The month of May can be very productive for the spring skippers and Duke of Burgundy. |
Additional notes: | It’s an amazing location with spectacular views. Well-known for the Duke of Burgundy colony and it boasts an excellent list of orchids species. The steep slope requires a reasonable level of fitness. |
Getting there: | There is no designated car park, and so park in Heyshott village (with due care) at SU900176. Walk south along the lanes until you reach the main entrance to the site at SU899172. |
