Description: | This downland site is owned and managed by The National Trust. The defensive banks and ditches of this ancient hill-fort have created ideal conditions for a multitude of butterfly species. The scrubby, sheltered south-facing slopes are usually the most productive. |
Species: | Target species include all the Sussex skippers, Clouded Yellow, Wall, Small Heath, Dark Green Fritillary, Small Copper, Brown Hairstreak, Adonis Blue, and Chalk Hill Blue. |
Best time to visit: | All-season-long but very productive in July and August when it is possible to see 25 butterfly species in just one day. It is one of the best sites in Sussex for autumn butterflies. |
Additional notes: | Cissbury Ring is an excellent location to see large numbers of butterflies. Before visiting it is worthwhile having a background read about the history of this hill-fort. And by the way, the views are stunning! |
