Yesterday, I spent a few hours walking over Anchor Bottom, trying to assess the number of Adonis Blue currently flying there. Although their numbers vary across the site, I still found plenty even on the seldom-visited area high up on the north-facing slope. Surprisingly, other than a couple visiting from Shropshire, the only people I met were the good folk who diligently monitor the site, whether by transect or single-species counts. I bumped into JC, who had recorded (I think) 2148 Adonis Blue, counting just the males on a regularly repeated route. We estimated that there were between 8000 and 10000 flying over the entire site. Following a welcome release in grazing pressure, this site is rapidly returning to its best. Large numbers of Small Heath were flying, together with more modest numbers of Common Blue and a handful of Chalk Hill Blue, and the ubiquitous Clouded Yellow.
