While working in my garden a Camberwell Beauty appeared, much to my surprise, I used to live in Italy so immediately recognised it. No photo as it vanished as quickly as it appeared. A wonderful sight.

Wow! We haven't recorded one of those for several years. I have no issue with the absence of a photo. This is a very recognizable butterfly and for anyone who has seen a few (or many) it is a very easy ID. This species is usually recorded in late summer, and on the east coast of England and Scotland. Sometimes it spreads its wings and moves further west. If one is seen, there are probably others out there. For breeding (in the spring) they head for Willows and Poplars. At this time of the year they will most likely be heading for Buddleia, as they need to stock up for the winter hibernation. For anyone who has a garden Buddleia you know what to do. Thanks, Gill, a great record. PS that takes us to 50 butterfly species this year! Martin K
