By coincidence I visited Verdley Wood yesterday - 2 WW seen, on the main ride where they were also seen last July and this May. Both appeared to be males from their dark markings. So, it does appear that there is a small colony established at Verdley.
I was slightly surprised by how good the conditions were - there was plenty of vetches and trefoils which are WW foodplants and also an abundance of nectar sources - creeping and spear thistles, lesser knapweed, yellow fleabane, betony, tansy, ragwort etc. It seemed much less parched than many places I’ve been recently. Plenty of other butterflies too. Meadow Brown and Gatekeeper frequent, at least 6 each of SWF and Painted Lady, a few Small and Large Whites, a couple of Common Blue and Brimstone, a Brown Argus, a Red Admiral and a Speckled Wood. There’s a nice ditch that runs alongside the ride too, see picture. There is a side ride which looks very suitable too. I guess this whole area is managed specifically for the Pearl-bordered Fritillary, which is still found there. The management is producing excellent conditions for WW too. When I checked last year, I think I found only one other site in the UK with both species.
