Report Details
Less than 24 hours after me telling Martin I hadn't seen a Small Tortoiseshell in East Sussex for over 2 years, one appeared for me today, much to my delight! In what proved to be my most productive butterfly-spotting afternoon, ever, I counted over 1,400 Chalk Hill Blue, and around 200 each of Meadow Brown and Gatekeeper. Other species seen were: Small Heath (6), Small White (19), Essex Skipper (3), Small Skipper (7), Common Blue (77), Brown Argus (5), Painted Lady (5), Large White (5), Clouded Yellow (2), Dark Green Fritillary (4), Green-veined White (2), Marbled White (20), Peacock (1), Small Blue (1), Comma (2), Red Admiral (2), Wall (9), Speckled Wood (1), and my 40th butterfly species of 2026 in Sussex, Silver-spotted Skipper (1).

Chris has had success, this year, with Large Tortoiseshell sightings in Abbots Wood and Malling Down (both spring records). He then told me about the absence of records for Small Tortoiseshell for 2+ years. I am delighted he caught up this species (and a good-looking individual, as well).   Martin K
