Butterfly sighting
Kat's caterpillar - Painted Lady on Viper's-bugloss
Report Details
A day (29 June) on the Amberley Downs with Kat Dahl, and guest appearances by Fritillary Finder General Patrick Moore, Martin K and Mike Lowe, turned out to be a cracker. Although not all were present at the magical moments, we saw Queen of Spain Fritillary twice, several hours and significantly more than 0.5 km apart. It's unclear whether there were one or two individual butterflies present, as we never got close enough to photograph the first, but I suspect the latter scenario. The Queen we did photograph was definitely Patrick's individual from 28 June, recognised by a small chip on the inner left costa. Other species recorded included Small Skipper, Essex Skipper, Large Skipper, Large White, Small White, Green-veined White, Clouded Yellow, Brimstone, Speckled Wood, Small Heath, Ringlet, Meadow Brown, Gatekeeper, Marbled White, Dark Green Fritillary, Red Admiral, Painted Lady, Peacock, Small Tortoiseshell, Comma, Small Copper, Small Blue, Holly Blue, Brown Argus, Common Blue, Chalk Hill Blue and Brown Hairstreak (a male, and by far my earliest ever sighting of this species). By the end of the day (I stayed late, to bathe in the glory of this midsummer madness) I'd seen nearly 20 Humming-bird Hawk-moth. We also saw three Hornet Robberfly - again, ridiculously early - and Kat found a lovely Painted Lady caterpillar gorging on Viper's-bugloss.

I would imagine this is the first-ever, June record, in Sussex, of Brown Hairstreak. We are recording this species earlier and earlier. In the website years 2006-2015, the average first sighting date was July 26th. In the years 2015-2025 it was July 15th. In both 2022 and 2025 there was a record on July 2nd, and now we have a June record! That's 47 butterfly species recorded in Sussex before June end!!    Martin K
