I had some Fathers Day dispensation to go out, so I did a morning morning trip to Abbots Wood and a quick afternoon visit to Cradle Bottom near High and Over. At Abbots Wood there were loads of Silver-washed Fritillaries along all of the rides that had brambles in flower. Three White Admirals were also seen, as well as uncountable numbers of Meadow Browns and many Purple Hairstreaks in the oaks. Other species counted: Painted Lady (8), Red Admiral (3), Comma (2), Small Copper (2), Speckled Wood (2), Ringlet (1), Marbled White (1), Large, Small and Green-veined White (1 of the latter), Small Skipper (several), Large Skipper (2). At Cradle Bottom from around 3:30pm, there were lots of Marbled Whites and Meadow Browns. I also added to the day's total: Common Blue (1), Small Blue (2), Dark Green Fritillary (2+), Small Heath (5+), Peacock (1). Back in Berwick, I visited the station in order to add Gatekeeper to the day list. I expect I've left out a couple from the sightings above, but I think the total for the day was 22 species. More importantly, I spent a thoroughly enjoyable few hours in some beautiful local spots where the butterflies seem to be doing pretty well. A day to remember!
