Butterfly sighting
Ringlet. 13/06/2026.
Report Details
Lisa and I surveyed a private wood today near Lewes and saw 15 species. This included several new species for the year for us as we've been away from the area. Following Lisa finding a Purple Hairstreak in Kent on Thursday in horrible weather whilst we searched for Heath Fritillaries, we were pleased to find a single Purple Hairstreak today. A single Ringlet was also seen along with Silver-washed Fritillaries, White Admiral, Small Skipper in good number, Large Skipper, Marbled White, Meadow Brown, Red Admiral, some fresh Peacock, Small White, Large White, Common Blue, Holly Blue and Comma. The Purple Hairstreak gave good views as it sat on the top of some bracken, but unfortunately flew up to the canopy before we could get any photos.

That's the 40th and the 41st butterfly species seen this year. Probably a county record for the earliest date, for the 40th species recorded.  Martin K
